What is your hometown?

Houston, TX

What is your favorite recording?

Old recordings of George Szell conducting the Cleveland Orchestra and Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra, preferably on vinyl.

What are you passionate about outside of music?

European history, travel, and Wolfram, my Italian greyhound.

Who were your major teachers?

John de Lancie and James Caldwell.

What is a favorite quote that you repeatedly tell students?

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,” and “God is in the details.”

What was the defining moment when you decided to pursue music as a career?

I can't say there was a single defining moment when I decided to pursue music as a career. I had excellent, inspiring teachers as well as good fortune and satisfying professional opportunities early in my career. Playing music and teaching music is the only career I've known.

What was a turning point in your career?

Becoming the assistant to my own teacher, John de Lancie, at the Aspen Music Festival. Working with and enjoying the process involved in developing talented young oboists, while actively maintaining my own performing schedule. When in optimal balance, the two reinforce each other beautifully.

If you weren't a musician or teacher, what do you think you would be doing now?

Museum curator or art historian.

What is your daily practice routine?

Ideally, an hour of scales and long tones in the morning, an hour of etudes in the afternoon, and an hour of pieces for performances in the evening. However, reed-making and life's reality can intercede and necessitate adjustments.

What are your most important collaborations?

Many studio recordings at Skywalker Ranch; the world premiere of the musical Wicked; and multiple Grammy-winning recordings with the San Francisco Symphony.
